Feeling Safe In Your World: Pink Shirt Day (And) Movement

In our classroom, bullying stops here.

Who ever you are…

How ever you enjoy your day…

You should feel safe in every way.

In art, we have been learning about movement in a human body. One of our learning objective was to think of all the ways a body moves and then show this in our drawing. This was a two-day art project because we had so much fun bringing our perfect paper people to life. They were pretty popular as paper people started playing with each other …with a little help from students. Each time Ms Clayton collected these paper people with a big paper clip they were quickly pulled back out into the classroom to play.

We were interested in learning how to draw pictures of jumping, dancing and hopping bodies. We talked about all the different ways people like to have fun with friends. How ever you like to spend your time, you have the right to be treated fairly and respectfully. This is why we chose to have pink shirts on our active people drawings. If you think that only girls wear pink or that only girls go to dance class then you might be viewing the world through a lens of stereotypes. Stereotypes are when we think all girls like to wear dresses or that all boys play hockey. There are many things to learn about diversity Т and here are some books that helped us remember to not automatically think in stereotypes: “Oliver Button is a Sissy” and “The Only Boy in Dance Class.” See our earlier post on Pink Shirt Day and Valentine’s Day.

Here are some of the ways we showed movement:

Please take a look at our Vimeo slide show where kindergarten and grade one students drew themselves moving in their specialТ Pink Shirts:

Have you participated in special events that take a stand against bullying?

Have you watched any of the anti-bullying flash mobs that students are participating in this year?
